Build a useful timeline

Begin with the first day the change was noticeable. Add what happened before it, how long it lasted, what made it better or worse and whether the dog returned to their usual behaviour afterwards.

Short videos can be helpful for movement, breathing, scratching or episodes that may not occur in the consultation. Film the whole dog when possible and keep the original speed so timing and posture remain visible.

Patterns are often more informative than isolated events.

When observation should become an appointment

Seek advice promptly when a change is sudden, painful, progressive, affects breathing or balance, or is accompanied by collapse, repeated vomiting, inability to urinate, severe lethargy or a rapidly expanding abdomen.

For slower changes, a concise diary over several days can make the appointment more productive. The aim is not to diagnose at home; it is to bring a clearer description of what has changed.
